I must be doing something wrong. Or maybe I can only do so much. I think I’m a pretty good motivator, inspiring, persuasive, adept at generating excitement. I see it all the time. On the tennis court with students, talking to people in Starbucks or the grocery store, my energetic enthusiasm creates real positive energy.
But where does it go when I leave? After spending a few minutes with me, the hair stylist or customer service representative will be asking me for my contact information, and telling me how excited they are to start playing tennis and getting into shape. They’re going to make time, change habits, increase happiness, and can’t wait to get started. Then when I walk out the door and stop pumping the bellows that fan the flames, the fire starts to go out, allowing the iron to begin cooling.
Getting started isn’t easy or comfortable. I can make it sound simple or exciting, but you still have to get up and walk, stretch, run, jump, or swing that racquet. We both know how good you’ll feel when you get out there and do something. Sadly, we also know how you’ll feel if you let another opportunity pass, and see yourself getting farther away from reaching your goals.
The iron is hot. Pick up your hammer.
